A lace closure tightens the whole cuff in one continuous line rather than clamping it with a single strap, so the wrist is held evenly from the base of the hand up. The trade-off is that you cannot get them on by yourself — someone has to tie them, which is why lace-ups tend to stay at the gym while velcro travels.
