Elias started late. Most fighters who go pro grew up in the sport. He didn't — he came to martial arts as an adult, at a point in his life when he needed something that wouldn't let him lie to himself. It held. Training didn't just make him a fighter; it gave him somewhere to put the worst of himself and a way to keep standing when things fell apart. He went on to fight professionally. The shop and the cafe grew out of the same instinct that kept him training: build the thing he needed and couldn't find.

Because it didn't exist. Phuket draws fighters from all over the world, and yet there was still nowhere local to put gloves on your own hands before paying for them, no one to give an answer that wasn't a sales pitch, nowhere to sit down afterward without being moved along. So he made one. MMAGuy is a fighter-owned fight gear shop and cafe in Chalong, in the heart of the island's fight scene. He runs it with his partner, Benja, who manages the cafe and makes the coffee herself. Everyone behind the counter trains. Most days the room fills with local fighters, people passing through, and regulars who treat it as theirs.

Gear is usually bought blind — a photo, a size chart, and a guess you only learn was wrong when it's too late to return it. Here it works the other way. You put the glove on and hit something, and you find out on the spot whether it's yours. The person sizing you fights too, and has no reason to flatter you. Phuket's humidity is hard on cheap synthetic; a bad glove can be finished inside a month, while a good one chosen in person lasts years. We ship across Thailand and worldwide when you need that. The shop is still the better answer.
